What is an immediate denture?
Does “immediate” mean it’s made in one day?
No. The denture is built before your extraction date, not on it. “Immediate” describes when it goes in, not how fast it’s made.
What’s different about immediate dentures
Should you get immediate dentures?
You can have a denture ready for extraction day, or you can have the teeth removed, let your gums heal for several months, and have a conventional denture made once everything has settled. Neither one is wrong. They suit different people.
| Immediate Denture | New Conventional Denture | |
|---|---|---|
| When you get teeth | The same appointment your teeth come out | After 1-6 months of healing |
| Time without teeth | None | Months |
| Matching your natural teeth | Depending on the state of remaining teeth some information can be retained. | More accurate look and fit |
| Fit over the first year | Changes as you heal; adjustments are planned in | Fitted to a healed, stable mouth |
| Reline or replacement | Needed once healing finishes | Not usually needed early on |
| Total cost over the first year | Slightly higher, because of the later reline or replacement | Slightly Lower |

Patient FAQ
What to Expect After Extraction Day
You’ll leave our office with teeth. Here’s what the healing process actually looks like.
Will my denture fit right away?
Yes — but not permanently. Immediate dentures are placed the same day as extraction, so you never go without teeth. But as your gums heal and your jawbone remodels over the following months, the fit will change. That's completely normal and expected.
How often will I need to come back?
Plan on several visits in the first few months. Early on, we'll adjust pressure spots and monitor healing. As your tissue changes, we'll add temporary soft relines. Most patients settle into a stable fit within four to six months.
What's a reline, and why do I need one?
A reline reshapes the inside surface of your denture to match your current gum contours. Soft relines are temporary — they cushion and adapt during active healing. A hard or permanent reline is done once your gums have fully stabilized, giving you a long-term comfortable fit.
What happens if I skip follow-ups?
The denture becomes loose, uncomfortable, and can cause sore spots or tissue damage. Healing doesn't pause because you skip an appointment — your mouth keeps changing whether or not your denture is adjusted to match.
What to Expect After Extraction Day
You’ll leave our office with teeth. Here’s what the healing process actually looks like.
This isn’t a flaw in the process — it IS the process. Immediate dentures are designed to evolve with you.
That’s why follow-up care isn’t optional. Soft relines, pressure adjustments, and eventually a permanent reline are all part of giving you a denture that fits as well in month six as it did on day one.
